The Jazz Club marks the start of its new season with top local musicians led by Sandy Cameron, honouring music of jazz great Benny Goodman.
Benjamin David Goodman (May 30, 1909 – June 13, 1986) was an American clarinetist and bandleader often referred to as the "King of Swing". From 1936 until the mid-1940s, Goodman led one of the most popular swing big bands in the US. His concert at Carnegie Hall in New York City on January 16, 1938, was hailed by critic Bruce Eder as "the single most important jazz or popular music concert in history: jazz's 'coming out' party to the world of 'respectable' music." Goodman's bands started the careers of many jazz musicians, and during an era of racial segregation, he led one of the first integrated jazz groups. He performed well into his senior years while exploring an interest in classical music.
After an opening set of Goodman classics, Sandy will welcome guest musicians to the stage for an impromptu session. For more details on the show and the Jazz Club’s plans for coming season, please see this recent article in the Salmon Arm Observer.
