This week’s show features the Chris Petterson Trio, with local musicians Chris Petterson (tenor sax) and Jake McIntyre-Paul (bass) joined by Will Friesen (drums) from Kelowna.
Chris got his start in our local high school music program. He credits local band teachers Brian Pratt-Johnson, Jim Johnston and Gordon Waters with inspiring him to pursue music seriously. He later attended Vancouver Island University (formerly Malaspina University-College), where he honed his skills. Lessons with former teacher and local sax star Sandy Cameron also helped shape Chris' approach to the instrument. The result is a brilliant saxophonist whose playing reflects his respect for the history of his instrument in bebop, as well as a keen sense for more modern approaches. If you have not yet heard him, don’t miss this opportunity!
The group will perform music inspired by the trio work of saxophonist Sonny Rollins, who was periodically accompanied by bass and drums, without piano. This instrumentation would later be referred to as "strolling". The albums “Way Out West” and “A Night at the Village Vanguard” were recorded during this period. Rollins continued to use the trio approach from time to time throughout his career, occasionally using his sax as a rhythm instrument during bass and drum solos.
