It’s Christmas time again, and the Jazz Club is pleased to bring you Sandy Cameron’s “Merry Kriz” show. This tradition began in 2016 and was interrupted only once, by the COVID-19 pandemic. For 2022, Sandy has lined up a “Little Big Band” with his Shuhorn ensemble, and will be tackling more complex arrangements of your favorite holiday tunes as well as a few jazz standards.
The Shuhorns is a nine-piece jazz band. The group includes alto sax (Brook Roberts), tenor sax (Sandy Cameron), baritone sax (Mike Scharffe), trumpet (Liam Nadurak), trombone (Rich Thorne), piano (Jim Johnston), guitar (Jake McIntyre-Paul), bass (Dan Smith) and drums (Gareth Seys). Vocalist Andrea Roberts will be featured on several tunes. The group will perform pop and traditional carols, based on arrangements that create lovely harmonies and interesting rhythmic passages.
Sandy’s idea to undertake his “Kriz” show with this group took root a few years ago, when a fellow player in the Island Big Band gave him a package of horn arrangements. Sandy explained, “With a few other arrangements I already had, plus a couple of non-Christmas tunes, we had enough material for a show.”
The band includes six working or retired teachers, as well as former band students from the local school music program. This highlights the rich history of local music education and its importance to our community.
If history repeats, this show will be well-attended, so be sure to show up early to get your favorite seat. Merry Christmas everyone!
