Featuring:
Craig Thomson — Tenor Sax
Bernie Addington — Double Bass
Mike Treadway — Drums
This week, the Jazz Club is pleased to present an Okanagan-based trio led by saxophonist Craig Thomson. Local jazz fans may recall Craig from his shows in previous seasons, where he performed the music of saxophone greats Hank Mobley, John Coltrane and Dexter Gordon.
Craig is a prolific performer, composer, recording artist and educator. He has built a reputation as an outstanding saxophonist who delights audiences with his robust, muscular tenor sound, which is fresh and exciting while remaining anchored in the jazz tradition. Whether in the field of jazz performance or education, Craig Thomson’s name is synonymous with warmth, excellence, style and sophistication. For additional details, check out his website.
For this show, Craig will play material from Joe Henderson’s masterpiece “The State of the Tenor”. Henderson built his reputation at Blue Note records in the Kenny Dorham band as well as with Horace Silver (e.g., Song for My Father). His work can also be heard on Lee Morgan's The Sidewinder, Andrew Hill's Point of Departure, and Larry Young's Unity. State of the Tenor was recorded over 3 days at the Village Vanguard in 1985, where Ron Carter (bass) and Al Foster (drums) accompanied him.
